In the quiet South Korean seaside town of Sokcho, 23-year-old Sooha works at a small guesthouse while searching for her place between two cultures. Her routine is disrupted by the arrival of Yan Kerrand, a mysterious French comic-book artist. As an unexpected connection develops between them, his presence awakens unanswered questions about her identity and the French father she has never known.
Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Swiss-Korean author Elisa Shua Dusapin, Winter in Sokcho is a delicate and atmospheric exploration of identity, solitude and belonging. Blending the wintry landscapes of South Korea with subtle animation and striking performances by Bella Kim and Roschdy Zem, director Koya Kamura crafts an intimate and visually poetic debut. Premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, the film later won Best Director at the 2025 Bergamo Film Meeting and the World Cinema Award at the 2025 Galway Film Fleadh.
