About the workshop

Join Isabelle Desjeux for an interactive experience, where you will collaborate in groups to create pages of Buang's Lost Notebook.
Buang, the Lost Malay Scientist, is best known as Ali, Alfred Wallace’s faithful assistant and co-discoverer of the Theory of Evolution.

Choose your role as a Scientist, Engineer, Artist, or Pataphysicist, and imagine a scientific discovery using only low-tech materials, inspired by recent findings, inspired by recent publications in Science and Nature.

Teams will sketch their inventions, reflecting the resourcefulness of Buang on his remote island, and share their creations on a common Padlet. You will be able to present your ideas, celebrating the inventive spirit of science while opening the door for wider participation in this exciting journey of creativity!

About Isabelle Desjeux

Isabelle Desjeux is a Umeå  (Sweden) and Singapore-based artist and researcher. Using her training in Molecular Biology, she creates new kinds of scientific method-based artworks. Working closely with scientists, she encourages others to cross the divide and take on the role of scientist in her interventions, whether in a class, during a workshop, or as part of an installation. As such her work has often been labelled as participatory, with "experiment" being a strong part of her practice.

She received her MAFA from Lasalle (2011), was the recipient of the French-Singapore New Generation Artist (2011), and of a Lasalle Research Fellowship (2017). Her work has been exhibited in museums across Singapore, in Japan and USA. She teaches regularly across disciplines from pre-school to post-graduate level, inviting students into her practice.

Founded in 2019, Cuturi Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in Singapore with a strong focus on emerging Singaporean talents, many of whom form the core of the gallery ’s roster. While rooted in its local context, Cuturi Gallery also actively collaborates with emerging and established artists across borders, extending its vision beyond Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific, fostering meaningful exchanges that bridge cultural perspectives between the East and the West. This ongoing dialogue is central to the gallery ’s mission.
In 2020, the gallery launched an in-house residency programme, offering both local and international artists the opportunity to develop new work in Singapore, culminating in a solo presentation. In 2022, Cuturi Gallery began a programme of satellite exhibitions in London, with plans to establish a permanent international outpost by the end of 2026.
In March of 2026, the gallery opened a Parisian space in the heart of the PalaisRoyal, strenghtening its international position and its ambition to foster dialogue between the Asian and European artists it represents, as well as curators and transnational audiences
