Was it because Murger himself had experienced this way of life in his youth? No one but him managed to describe with greater accuracy, in his Scenes of Bohemian Life, these penniless, starving artists, ready to burn a manuscript for a bit of warmth yet dreaming of another life in an age of triumphant materialistic bourgeoisie.
By drawing on these scenes, Puccini offers us, through the relationship between the poet Rodolfo and the fragile Mimì, a deeply moving love story and some of the most beautiful pages of his operatic work. The staging of this production is entrusted to Claus Guth, who places the drama in a hopeless future where love and art become the last form of transcendence.
