Alliance Française de Singapour invites you to embark on a musical voyage through distant horizons, unexpected encounters and ever-changing landscapes. Celebrating travel in all its forms, this intimate concert explores the emotions and experiences that accompany us along the way: the excitement of setting off, the freedom of the open road, the wonder of discovering unfamiliar places and the memories we gather as the journey unfolds. During this evening, you will be able to purchase a selection of wine specifically curated for the event by People of Wine.
Led by multilingual vocalist Maria Lavergne, guitarist and composer Rick Smith, and percussionist Rizal Sanip, the performance brings together voice, strings and rhythm to create a vibrant musical itinerary. Drawing on their rich international experiences and diverse cultural influences, the three artists will travel across languages, borders and musical traditions. From intimate melodies evoking quiet moments of contemplation to lively rhythms filled with movement and possibility, each song will become a new landscape to explore.
For one evening, let the music carry you somewhere else. Follow its changing rhythms, wander through its melodies and experience a journey where every song opens a new horizon.
Maria Lavergne
Maria Lavergne is an artist, educator, and the founder of MUSIKAR. Grounded in a rich musical career and a naturally global perspective, she has built a reputation for bringing nuance, elegance, and deep cross-cultural connection to both the stage and the classroom.
A multilingual artist fluent in French, English, Arabic & Armenian, Maria seamlessly bridges cultural divides to connect with diverse international audiences. Her performance career spans prominent venues and high-profile milestones across Singapore and Hong Kong, including celebrated appearances at Bastille Day IFS, Au Bout de Mes Rêves, the Vive 90s Charity Concert, the Alliance Française, the Swiss Club, the historic Armenian Church, and large-scale regional events at AsiaWorld-Expo.
Alongside her work as a performer, Maria is an accomplished vocal coach for adults, children, and early childhood learners. Through MUSIKAR, she pairs extensive stage experience with a passion for early music education, creating transformative programs that inspire the next generation of listeners and performers.
Rick Smith
Rick Smith is a guitarist, educator and composer with over 40 years of professional experience. He has been based in Singapore for since 1991, contributing to the local Arts and Music scene as a teacher and performer. During this time he directed the NUS Jazz Band for more than 10 years and served as the bandleader/ guitarist at the legendary jazz venue “Harry’s Bar at Boat Quay” for 17 years.
He is fluent in Mandarin and has arranged performed and composed for Chinese Artistes such as Cai Qin and Harlem Yu, as well as acting in local Mandarin TV programming. In 2006 his composition “Something’s Wrong” was in the top 10 for MTV Indonesia’s Newcomer of the Year award and his 2007 release “Liminal Man” garnered international critical acclaim.
He performs regularly with multi-talented vocalist Richard Jackson in the region. He holds a BA in Music composition and an MA in Master of Arts in Arts Pedagogy and Practice. He taught Music at the LFS Singapore from 2016 to 2020. Currently he is teaching at SOTA and Lasalle school of the Arts.
Rizal Sanip
Rizal Sanip is a home-grown drummer whose passion for music has propelled him into musicals, starting with “Honk!” in 2002. Serving as a regular in the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band for 13 years, he’s had the honour of a few roles - percussion section leader, drum major, arranger/guitarist for dance band and emcee for concerts, to name a few.
A studio musician as well, he plays drums, percussions and trumpet. Rizal’s working relationship with Pangdemonium, The Theatre Practice, Dream Academy, Wild Rice Productions, SRT, Vizpro, Toy Factory and Base Entertainment has provided him with ample opportunities to work in theatre productions as a session drummer. He has also played instrumental roles in nurturing young minds, teaching music at both international and local schools in Singapore.
Never overplaying or underplaying, Rizal fills every role in the right vein to contribute to the overall beauty of the musical moment. To enrich his experience as a veteran musician, Rizal went back to school at age 48 to obtain a music degree from Lasalle College of the Arts. BA(Hon) Jazz. He feels blessed to have a career in music, continually be involved with major theatre productions and concerts.
