“An adventure between legend and modernity, with a distinctive visual style.”
ABUS DE CINÉ

Deep in the mountains of China, fourteen-year-old Muyi lives with her grandmother in a secluded village where men are forbidden. When she encounters a travelling opera troupe performing the legend of the Handsome General, she invites them to her village—unwittingly awakening an angry spirit. Determined to restore balance, Muyi embarks on an extraordinary journey through ancient China, uncovering long-buried secrets about her family and discovering the courage to shape her own destiny.

Muyi, and the Handsome General (Muyi, la légende du village des femmes) is a richly imaginative animated adventure weaving together Chinese mythology, ancestral memory and a young girl’s rebellion against inherited rules. Directed by Julien Chheng, co-written with Sujuan Xu, and produced by Studio La Cachette, the film combines expressive 2D animation with a story of courage, identity and women’s resilience. Selected for Annecy’s Contrechamp Competition and Toronto’s Centrepiece programme in 2026, it invites audiences into a world where opera, magic and family history intertwine.
