Poor Madame Butterfly! This young fifteen-year-old geisha, who gives up her family and her Japanese traditions for love of an American lieutenant who ultimately abandons her.
From this classic theme of the seduced and forsaken woman, Giacomo Puccini created an opera of lush orchestration and passionate lyricism. Premiered in 1904 at La Scala, the score—rich with oriental colors—powerfully conveys the contrast between the brutality of Officer Pinkerton and Butterfly’s vulnerability, as fragile as the wings of a small butterfly.
