BLUES @ THE LIBRARY | DANCE WORKSHOP & PARTY
Blues à la Médiathèque
Saturday 13 June 07:30 PM
La médiathèque , Alliance Française de Singapour
About the event
An evening of music, movement, and soulful connection!
You felt the blues in Sinners. You've heard it in B.B. King. What you might not know is Blues is also a dance and right here, in Singapore, a community has been dancing it every week.
Blues grew up in the juke joints, spaces African Americans built for themselves when excluded from most public spaces. There, they drank, made music, danced, shared joy and grief, and reclaimed a sense of freedom in their movement.
"They invented it just because they wanted to feel alive for a few hours, Friday and Saturday night."
— Ryan Coogler, director of Sinners, on the African Americans who created Blues music
Come feel that aliveness — in a library, of all places!
7:30 - 9:00 PM — Blues Immersion Workshop
Learn to partner dance to Blues music. No partner, no experience needed. Just you. You'll find your own pulse in the music, learn how to move with someone else — low, grounded, unhurried — and hear the history that lives inside every step.
9:00 - 10:30 PM — Live Music Party
Guitarist Victor Chen plays live. Take what you learned to the floor, or settle in on the bean bags and let the music move through you.
To make this experience even more indulgent, you will also get to enjoy a glass of wine especially picked by People Of Wine for this occasion.
Dance Instructor - Rachel Yang
Growing up in classrooms where movements were strictly policed, Rachel found in Blues an ongoing answer to what it means to be at home in one's body. She has taught Blues dancing across Asia, and is dedicated to learning its roots, including teacher training in the US and Europe. She teaches weekly in Singapore, and is committed to growing the Blues community with care and inclusivity.
Dance Instructor - Elisha Lim
With over 15 years of dance experience, Elisha transitioned into the world of Blues three years ago and immediately found a home in its soulful rhythm and connection. Now an active competitor and instructor, his focus on sharing the expressive nuance and deep partner communication that first drew him to the genre.
Guitarist - Victor Chen
Victor plays the blues and its sub-genres in various instrumental line-ups, inspired by the myriad sounds of Mississippi ranging from the gritty delta to the hypnotic hill country, the swaggering shuffles of post-war Chicago and the urbane swing of the West Coast. He is also exploring new sounds, joining up the threads of influence between classic and modern rock, psychedelia and ethnomusicology with Americana. One foot firmly in the past, the other dipping a toe in the sonic waters of the future.
People Of Wine
People of Wine was created in 2024 by Geraldine Bablot, a French national living in Singapore since 2010. Over the years, Geraldine has celebrated artisanal wines and uncovered the stories behind the winemakers. People of Wine is her dream realized.
The mission of People of Wine is to spotlight winemakers and growers who pour heart and soul into every bottle. Each wine reflects authenticity, craft, and character. The goal: helping customers discover bottles that spark connection.
