Ballet - The Making of an Étoile
Join the dance at Alliance Française
From Friday 29 May to Saturday 15 August, our Gallery held Ballet - The Making of an Étoile, an original exhibition in collaboration with Opéra National de Paris. An invitation to follow the incredible journey of these famous "étoile dancers," from their debut to the greatest moments of their careers.

DIVE IN PARIS OPERA DAILY LIFE
From the very first moment, visitors were invited to discover the secrets of daily life at the Paris Opera. Did you know that doctors worked within the Opéra National de Paris? That the stage of the Palais Garnier was not flat, but inclined, so that spectators at the back could still see the whole show? Or that a hidden lake lay beneath the famous building?
That was the purpose of the exhibition: to show that the Opera is not just a building, but a whole cultural institution, with its own story and traditions.
REAL COSTUMES, REAL STORIES
Beyond the stories, visitors could also see real pieces of Paris Opera history up close. As dance is an art of movement and emotion, the exhibition brought that physicality to life: excerpts from famous ballets such as Giselle and Le Parc, testimonies from étoile dancers themselves, and original costumes generously loaned by Singapore Ballet.

A PROGRAM FULL OF SURPRISES
As always at Alliance Française, an exhibition never comes alone. This special ballet program brought the exhibition to life through live performances (In Other Words, When the World Dances, Arts and Bubbles, Blues at the Library), film screenings (Rise, Opéra d'été, Ballerina), and meetings with Opera dancers themselves. Together, these events turned the Gallery into more than an exhibition; a place where Singapore audiences could truly step inside the world of the Paris Opera.
A WARM THANK YOU
The response exceeded all expectations: more than 1150 visitors came through the Gallery over the course of the exhibition, with over 250 of them joining a guided tour to discover the stories behind the costumes and the Opera's daily life. We warmly thank every visitor who came to share in this journey, as well as our partners at Opéra National de Paris, without whom this exhibition would not have been possible.
See you soon!
