2020's French Film Festival
We’re sure you might understand when we say that 2020 was a bit of a rough year for us all. However, we’re grateful that, together with you, we were able to bid a proper adieu to the year with the French Film Festival, the longest-running foreign film festival in Singapore!
Held between 6 and 22 November, the 2020 French Film Festival was organised by the Embassy of France in Singapore, in collaboration with local distributors and partners (of which we were one of them).
Alliance Française de Singapour, over two weeks, presented 19 films from a broad range of genres. These included side-splitting comedies and tear-jerking dramas, animated features for families, and heartwarming historical films set in turbulent times. The films were showcased in 35 separate screenings.
Some of our lucky moviegoers also got the opportunity to meet and pose any of their burning questions to the film’s directors. This year, we hosted five post-screening Q&A sessions over Zoom for the films, The Big Hit, A Friendly Tale, Appearances, and The Speech.
This year’s French Film Festival also had a little twist… a secret movie screening! A month before the secret screening on 20 Nov, we posted a series of 10 clues on our Instagram page, giving little hints as to the title of the movie.
The star of our secret screening was the film, Tout simplement noir, or Simply Black! Our secret screening generated much excitement among film buffs, with tickets selling out more than two weeks before the screening! (Perhaps our clues were too obvious?)
All in all, despite the pandemic and the turbulent year in general, Alliance Française is both grateful and glad that we were able to welcome you back onto our premises and share the best of French cinema with you. PS - We’ll be looking forward to seeing you at the 2021 French Film Festival!
