Alliance Française de Singapour is delighted to host Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery's newest exhibition in Singapore: Silent Voices.

Silent Voices explores the enduring resonance of still life painting through the works of Pierre Boncompain, Ziad Dalloul, and Denis Laget. Once a genre of quiet observation, still life has evolved over centuries—from depictions of material abundance to profound explorations of form, emotion, and conceptual ideas. This exhibition explores the unique voices of these three artists, each redefining the genre in their own way.

Pierre Boncompain’s luminous compositions evoke the warmth of Mediterranean life, blending Matisse-like simplicity with Bonnard’s harmonious palettes, embodying his belief that “painting is creating silence.” Ziad Dalloul’s “nature silencieuse” transforms everyday objects into meditations on the intimate world of lived spaces, expansive landscapes, and the tension between stillness and change. Denis Laget draws from the vanitas tradition, creating textured floral works that confront the fragility of beauty and the transience of life. Together, their works reveal the timeless appeal of still life as a powerful medium for reflection and reinvention.

Denis Laget

Denis Laget, born in Valence, France in 1958, is a Paris-based painter known for his richly textured paintings. Encouraged by his sister, he began drawing lessons at the Beaux-Arts in Valence before studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne. In 1980, he co-founded the exhibition space "Napalm" and gained early recognition through exhibitions at the Musée de Saint-Étienne and Centre Pompidou. Laget moved to Paris in 1986 and held his first institutional solo exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne in 1988, the same year he participated in the Venice Biennale.

Pierre Boncompain

Born in Valence, France, in 1938, Pierre Boncompain is recognized as one of the most distinguished living modernists from the School of Paris. With a career spanning over six decades, Boncompain’s works are celebrated for their mastery of color, form, and poetic sensibility, drawing inspiration from the Post-Impressionist tradition and the luminous Mediterranean light of Provence.

Ziad Dalloul

Born in Syria and based in Paris since 1984, Ziad Dalloul is celebrated for his mastery of painting, etching, and artists' books. A graduate of Damascus University’s Faculty of Fine Arts (1977), he taught art in Algeria before obtaining a degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1987). Dalloul redefines still life by imbuing everyday objects—curtains, tables, beds, and chairs—with a quiet, contemplative presence, often placed against evocative landscapes. His collaboration with Syrian poet Adonis merges visual expression with the richness of Arabic literary traditions.
