FRANCOPHONIE FILM FESTIVAL 2021

We are proud to present the 2021 edition of the Francophonie Film Festival!
Starting from 11 March, a diverse line-up of films revolving around this year's theme of "Gender Equality" has been prepared.

THE SWALLOWS OF KABUL [SOLD OUT]

Les hirondelles de Kaboul

Summer 1998 - Kabul in ruins under Taliban rule. Zunaira and Mohsen are young and in love. Despite the daily violence and misery, they hope for a better future. One day, a foolish gesture causes their lives to take an irrevocable turn.  

There will be a live Zoom Q&A with the film's director, Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec, after the screening.

AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE

Un amour impossible

In the late 1950s in Châteauroux, France, Rachel, a modest office worker, meets Philippe, a brilliant young man born to a bourgeois family. This brief but passionate connection results in the birth of a daughter, Chantal. Philippe refuses to marry outside of his social class and Rachel has to raise their daughter alone. Regardless, Chantal is a great source of happiness for Rachel. She wishes for Philippe to legally acknowledge his daughter, which would give her his last name. A battle of more than ten years ensues, which will eventually break up all their lives.

DELPHINE AND CAROLE

Delphine et Carole, insoumuses

A portrait of the enchanted feminism of the 1970s, the film retraces the encounter of actress Delphine Seyrig and director Carole Roussopoulos in 1974. Both militant feminists, they were the pioneers of video activism in France who documented the demonstrations of French feminists and used these new technologies to combat the poor representation of women in public media. With a camera in hand, Delphine and Carole will engage in radical fights with insolence, intransigence, and a lot of humour.

THE STORY OF A SUMMER LOVER [SOLD OUT]

Povestea unui pierde-vară

Petru is a professor of Mathematics at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. He leads a carefree life and enjoys an open relationship with his partner Irina, who overlooks the fact that he sleeps with other women from time to time. Once Irina gets pregnant, however, Petru curiously changes his lifestyle and decides that he wants to commit to her – all while he meets Sinziana, a new girl he has to tutor for the Mathematics examination at the university. One of his friends decides to write a book about his story.

MY NAME IS EFTIHIA

A young girl, recently married, is travelling from Aidini to Greece with her mother and her two daughters. On board the ship, she decides not to let life pass her by but to live the way she wants. She writes endlessly, wherever she can: on napkins, cigarette boxes and even bills. Her dedication pays off when she eventually succeeds in collaborating with the many famous music personalities of her country, bravely asserting herself in a male-dominated world to eventually become one of the greatest Greek folk songwriters.

SKIES OF LEBANON

Sous le ciel d'Alice

In the fifties, young Alice leaves her native Swiss mountains for the sunny and vibrant shores of Beirut. She falls madly in love with Joseph, a quirky astrophysicist intent on sending the first Lebanese national into space. Alice quickly fits in among his relatives, but after years of bliss, the civil war threatens their Garden of Eden. She will do her best to protect herself from the inevitable, refusing to give in to despair.

There will be a live Zoom Q&A with the film's director, Chloé Mazlo, after the screening on Friday (19 March).

THE GOLDEN THREAD

Elene is an 80-year-old writer who lives with her family, forced to stay home due to health conditions. Her comfort is cracked when her daughter's mother-in-law, Miranda (a former Soviet official who once banned one of Elene's books) moves into the apartment, and Elene receives an unexpected call from an old love interest, Archil. Moving through Elene’s reflections on her past and present circumstances, the film serves most of all as a broad portrait of a country in search of its destiny.

Screening of the short film Icyasha will be combined with the screening of the long-feature Made in Bangkok.

ICYASHA
A 12-year-old boy tries desperately hard to join a local boys' football team but is taunted and bullied for his effeminacy. In a world where boys must prove and claim their masculinity, his story captures the simultaneous pain and beauty of childhood.

MADE IN BANGKOK
Documentary filmmaker Flavio Florencio follows the journey of Morgana, a transgender opera singer who travels to Bangkok where she will represent Mexico in the Miss International Queen competition. More than anything, she wants to have a sex-change operation, and hopes she will win the title so she will be able to pay for her surgery using the prize money. The documentary embarks on Morgana’s odyssey as she follows her dream of asserting the identity she has been struggling all her life to construct.

THE LAST REEL

Sophoun, the rebellious daughter of a hard-line army colonel, lives her life for the moment, hanging out with a local gang. But when her father returns home with another arranged marriage proposal, Sophoun flees her imploding home and seeks refuge in a derelict cinema. There, she is shocked to discover an incomplete 1970s melodrama from pre Khmer Rouge times, a film which starred her now desperately ill mother as a glamorous young woman. With the help of the cinema's elderly projectionist, Sophoun re-makes the missing last reel of the film. In doing so, she is offered an opportunity to dictate her own destiny, but at the cost of uncovering some painful truths about her family and their past.

LA BOLDUC

In Montreal, at the beginning of the last century, a poor and uneducated mother manages to get her family out of its misery by becoming a folk singer of thundering success. In the wake of the economic crisis of the 20-30s and the first glimpses of the fight for woman's rights, the movie follows the life of Mary Travers Bolduc, her roaring career, difficult marriage and the touching relationship she had with her eldest daughter, Denise, who played the piano on her mother's albums and dreamed of becoming a Hollywood actress.

HEDI

Hedi, un vent de liberté

Hedi is a quiet young man following the path that has been traced out for him. Tunisia is changing, but Hedi does not expect much from the future and lets others make his big decisions for him. The same week his mother is preparing his marriage, his boss sends him to the seaside town of Mahdia to seek out new clients. At a crossroads, Hedi begins avoiding his professional duties and soon meets Rim, a free-spirited globetrotter working as an activity leader at a local resort. Rim’s lust for life quickly rubs off on Hedi and the two begin a passionate love affair. With preparations for the wedding in full swing back at home, Hedi is finally forced to make a choice for himself.
