A survey of Mountains in a country with barely any hills.
The survey investigates mountainous landscapes observed at various nature reserves around Singapore. Once vital during the building boom in the 1970’s -1980’s, these mountains have since ceased their functions and taken on a new role in providing a space of tranquillity.
“The Mountain Survey” treks the progression of these mountains across time as man attempts to subjugate the landscape for our purposes. The survey observes the changes in the role and function of these structures which often parallels the evolving national narrative of Singapore. Examining its transformation from a material resource to a spatial entity. A transformation vital in breaking the increasing urbanity across the island.
Marvin Tang, winner of the 8th France + Singapore Photographic Arts Award, is a Singaporean artist who uses photography in his investigations. His research examines various systems of control and its repercussions. Visualising social phenomenon that surfaces as a product of these systems.
