Alliance Française de Singapour has commissioned the rising star photographer Lavender Chang to celebrate its 70th anniversary by taking 70 portraits of its past and present members to pay tribute to the diversity of the Alliance Française community.
“A person’s presence and the living environment reveal the essence of the person. I believe one’s existence is not just formed by his or her physical self. The world is made up ofnumerous inter-linked universes, in constant flux. Every living and non-living thing represents a universe and eventually informs who we are.
To celebrate the diversity of the members of the Alliance Française, I captured these portraits in their homes, showing them at their most natural state without any pretense. Some of the key elements in my art practice are about condensing the duration of time and the indeterminacy of the creation process into one singular image. I explored the unexpected and unique elements of each person by capturing them with a long exposure shot, utilizing light painting.
Alliance Française represents the link between myself and the many new people I have met over the past few months. Many of them shared slices of their life with me during the creation of the artwork. This very meaningful and important experience we went through together will leave a positive imprint in our lives.” – Lavender Chang
Lavender Chang has exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum, Sundaram Tagore Gallery New York, Alliance Française de Singapour, Mizuma Gallery, the Singapore Art Show, and the Arts House in Singapore.
